Today we visit the Stockman’s Hall of Fame in Longreach outback Queensland.

Rich in history and character, the Stockman’s Hall of Fame and Heritage Centre is Australia’s foremost outback heritage institution. Since the doors opened in 1988, the Hall of Fame has hosted over one million interstate and international visitors, providing each one unforgettable outback experience.
Standing guard over the expansive grounds of the centre, The Ringer, a solid bronze sculpture casts a foreboding shadow, an enduring monument to the people that shaped the interior of modern day Australia, proudly displaying the history behind some of Australia’s greatest explorers, stock workers, pastoralists, and First Nations peoples.

KW : The Ringer statue out the front, what can you tell us about that?
Lloyd Mills, CEO of Stockman’s Hall of Fame : I can tell you that it was meant to come in here.
“When it was done, it was running late, the queen was coming. I mean that thing is solid bronze right, she’s solid.
And it was meant to take pride of place here in the building, but of course, architects being architects, we love them, kind of, they hadn’t made the doors big enough for this thing to get through. AS they say, you know that old saying, tie it up with wire, get the show on the road. SO they have got hold a couple of local blokes to lay a concrete slab on the green round a bout out the front of here and they put it up there and that did you know that that is probably the most photographed thing we have here.
We have people that have never come into the hall of fame, they drive in the driveway, take a photo of The Ringer and say “we’ve been there”. That’s the shot, that symbolizes, I guess, what we stand for.

You know it’s the guy getting off his horse, heading to the fence, heading to the yards, wherever it may be. But that’s the story behind that, it was meant to be in here, but it was too big to get through the doors.
KW: That's a great story, thanks for that.
LM: It’s a good story, you can imagine the panic can’t you, queen’s coming down the driveway and you haven’t got your shot together”.
KW : I think that’s remarkable that the queen came out here to open this, so that speaks volumes.
